You may have heard terms such as “optometry” and “optometrist” all your life without truly understanding the meaning behind them — but it is important that you recognize the importance of this aspect of eye care. Optometry is the practice of general eye health and vision testing, which means that optometrists are generally the first practitioners to detect and treat a wide range of problems. Our optometrist at Personal Eyes, LLC, Dr. Marie Homa-Palladino, serves as the primary eye care physician for patients in the West Chester, Wayne, Frazer, Marlven, Berwyn and Paoli areas.

Every time you go for a routine eye exam or vision testing, you’re most likely visiting an optometrist. Optometry focuses on primary and preventative eye care services. These services may include:

  • Evaluating the eye’s exterior and interior tissues for signs of eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, infections or retinopathy
  • Evaluating the eyes’ ability to move and focus in perfect coordination
  • Measuring the quantity and consistency of tear film in cases of dry eye syndrome or chronic eye irritation
  • Evaluating specific visual abilities such as color vision and peripheral vision
  • Vision testing to check for refractive errors and aberrations
  • Prescriptions for corrective lenses
  • First-line treatment of eye diseases, disorders and irritations

What to Expect During Your First Visit

A typical visit to our optometrist will include several easy, painless tests to look for signs of excess eye pressure, (a sign of glaucoma), blank spots in your vision (a sign of macular degeneration), blurred vision and other symptoms you might not even be aware of. Since eye disorders respond best to early intervention and treatment, we recommend regular eye exams even if you’re not experiencing any vision problems. If an eye disease or disorder is detected, we will either treat the condition here at Personal Eyes, LLC or refer you to the appropriate specialist.

Vision testing has always been central to optometry. Even small children need to get their visual acuity tested regularly since the eyes and the brain develop as a team. Detailed evaluations involving eye charts and a device called a phoropter enable us to determine exactly how well you’re seeing and what corrective measures, if any, need to be taken. Our optometrist is qualified to prescribe corrective lenses, which you can order right here at our in-house optical boutique.

Optometrists are characterized by their education, training, certification and experience. Dr. Homa-Palladino holds an O.D. from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. She also completed several externships to gain additional knowledge and expertise before entering the optometry field. As a practicing optometrist, Dr. Homa-Palladino gained even more insight by working with a variety of renowned experts in the field. Our patients know they can trust her for state-of-the-art eye health and vision care.
